Portage Community Chapel began in the 1960s as a small Baptist church plant in Ravenna, Ohio, known then as First Baptist of Ravenna. A dedicated group of believers came together with a shared vision — to worship God, grow in faith, and serve the community. Soon after, they purchased the land where our church still stands today and constructed a simple pole building that served as our first worship space.
In 1976, Pastor Barry Shahan responded to the call to lead the church, ushering in a season of growth and expanded ministry. During his leadership:
We added vibrant ministries such as AWANA in 1983, connecting families and children to the teaching of Scripture.
The physical church building grew, with additional classrooms, nursery space, and an updated sanctuary created to support a growing congregation.
By 1985, what is now our main sanctuary, narthex, and children’s wing was complete — a space designed with ministry and community in mind.
In 1987, as our mission continued to evolve, we changed our name to Portage Community Baptist Church, reflecting both our roots and our heart for community outreach.
During the early 1990s, new ministries and global outreach efforts took shape: summer mission teams were sent abroad, and our first full-time missionary was commissioned to serve in Paris, France.
As the church continued to grow and mature, significant changes helped shape who we are today:
By 1999, the congregation transitioned from its Baptist roots to become an independent, non-denominational church, emphasizing Scripture-centred teaching and community discipleship.
In 2006, the church embarked on a major expansion project — a 35,000 sq. ft. addition that included classrooms, a kitchen, and a gym — providing space for ministry growth and community events. Construction was completed in 2010.
After 37 years of faithful service, Pastor Barry retired in 2013 and became Pastor Emeritus, continuing to teach and encourage the church family.
Under Pastor Mark Miller’s leadership, the church continued to deepen its impact in the region.
In 2015, Portage Community Chapel launched a bold initiative to meet critical needs in Portage County — helping to establish what would become the Haven of Portage County, now called Shepherd’s House, a community homeless shelter, including the purchase of property to support its mission. Shepherd’s House officially opened its doors on April 20, 2022 — a testimony to what a church family can accomplish when it serves together.
In 2022, after 33 years of devoted leadership, Pastor Mark retired. Soon after, Ray Sigworth was affirmed by the congregation as our new Lead Pastor on March 20, 2022, signaling a new season of vision and mission for Portage Community Chapel.
Today, Portage Community Chapel remains a place where people connect with God, grow in grace, and serve others with compassion. Our story continues as we seek to glorify God through worship, discipleship, and outreach — in our community and around the world.
